TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The Ministry of National Defense (MND) on Friday expressed hope that a military drill ground in Pingtung County can continue to operate despite the long-term protest of locals against live-fire exercises, which they claim have damaged the local environment.

Military spokesman Luo Shao-ho told local media that the Joint Operations Training Base Command ([...]) is currently the only drill ground that can conduct regular joint-operations training of all three branches of the military.

A base that can serve as both a drill ground for live-fire testing and a facility for the training exercises of military brigades and the Marine Corps is "extremely important and irreplaceable," he said.

Luo's comments came as a response to the Pingtung County government's decision last December to hand the base a NT$300,000 fine for violation of the Soil and Water Conservation Act ([...]).

The latest move came amid a long-running feud between local residents and the military over the activities of the drill ground. …
