HAMILTON - The Trinity Western Spartans have put an end to another title opportunity for the Alberta Golden Bears.

Trinity Western will play for the CIS men's volleyball championship after knocking off two-time defending champion Alberta 3-2 on Friday in semifinal action.

The Canada West champions will meet McMaster on Sunday in the championship.

The No. 2 Spartans needed five sets to defeat their Canada West rival, 18-25, 25-20, 25-19, 20-25, 15-11.

Blake Scheerhorn led Trinity Western with 30 points while Ryan Sclater added 21.

"It feels pretty amazing," said Scheerhorn. "We knew this was a great Alberta team and that they were going to have a fire in their bellies, because we beat them in the Canada West semifinal, and it was going to be a battle tonight.

"We kept our heads on straight and knew that if we played our block defence, we'd be able to get out of tough situations. …
