OHL: Smereck keeps Gens' playoff hopes alive

OSHAWA, Ont. - Jalen Smereck was the lone scorer in the shootout as the Oshawa Generals edged the Peterborough Petes 4-3 on Sunday in Ontario Hockey League action.

Mitchell Vande Sompel scored twice in regulation as Oshawa (26-31-8) stayed in playoff contention. Sam Harding's goal at the 15:22 mark of the third period forced the extra time for the Generals, who are in a race with the Hamilton Bulldogs for the eighth and final playoff spot in the OHL's Eastern Conference.

Jonathan Ang, Greg Betzold and Josh Maguire built a 3-0 lead for the Petes (31-27-7).

Jeremy Brodeur started in net for Oshawa, stopping 6-of-9 shots in 11:30 of work. He was pulled after Maguire's goal in favour of Justin Nichols, who turned aside all 22 shots he faced in relief. …
