Yunlin County Set to Host 2017 Taiwan Lantern Festival

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Yunlin County has been selected as the host of the 2017 Taiwan Lantern Festival, one of the most important annual events during the Chinese New Year.

The festival next year is expected to be held at two sites: one at an agricultural park in Huwei township and another in the neighborhood around Zhongshan Street, one of the oldest streets of Beigang Township.

Yunlin beat its neighbor, Chiayi County, in a two-horse race for the rights to host next year's lantern festival, according to the Tourism Bureau under the Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC).

The Executive Yuan decided to award the rights to Yunlin following evaluation by a committee formed by government officials, industry executives and scholars on its ability and capacity to arrange the massive event, which usually attracts millions of visitors each year. …
