Man's stabbing death leaves hole in community

SASKATOON - Friends and family say the stabbing death of a man in a Saskatoon parking lot has left a big hole in a northern community already grieving loss.

Matthew Herman, who was 22, was visiting the city from La Loche when he was killed on Saturday.

The community is still healing from a shooting in January that killed four people and injured seven.

Leonard Montgrand of the La Loche Friendship Centre told CKOM radio that Herman helped others and stood up for his friends.

Montgrand said Herman volunteered at the centre and always had a smile on his face.

He also said Herman was often spotted mingling or playing hockey at the community rink.

"It's another tragic waste of life," Montgrand said

Friends saluted their former hockey teammate in online tributes. …
