WEYBURN, Sask. - The Brantford Ice Cats are the 2016 Esso Cup champions.

Nicole Kelly and Kayla Bailey each had two goals and two assists as Brantford downed the Express du Richelieu 10-3 on Saturday for Canada's national women's midget ice hockey championship.

Kelly finished as the tournament's leading scorer after her four-point outing. She had seven goals and 11 points in seven games.

The Express led 2-1 after 20 minutes, but Brantford blew the game open with a five-goal second period.

Brooklyn Gemmill also struck twice for the Ice Cats while Taylor Trussler tacked on a goal and four helpers. Chenelle Caron-Godon, Lauren Martin and Paige Rynne each scored once to round out the offence.

Emilie Lavoie had a pair of goals for the Express while Eloise Dube added the other. …
