Drunk driver gets one-year sentence

WINNIPEG - A one-year prison sentence has been handed to a Manitoba man for a drunk driving crash that he tried to blame on his passenger, who later died.

Jeffrey Isfeld was also handed two years of supervised probation this week following the crash back in October 2005.

Court was told Isfeld was driving Shane Lavallee, 24, home after a night of drinking when he lost control and flipped his pick-up truck.

Lavallee, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was thrown from the truck and into a ditch where he suffered serious wounds.

A pact was made between the two men that Isfeld would leave the scene of the wreck and Lavallee would "take the hit" for the impaired driving charge.

A passerby discovered the injured man several hours later, and Lavallee died three weeks later in a Winnipeg hospital. …
