Vatican's Japan Envoy to Attend Tsai Inauguration

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The Holy See is sending its top envoy to Japan to lead a delegation to President-elect Tsai Ing-wen's upcoming inauguration, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) announced on Thursday.

Anna Kao ([...]), director-general of MOFA's Department of European Affairs, said the Vatican has decided to dispatch Archbishop Joseph Chennoth, the Holy See's Apostolic Nuncio to Japan, to join the May 20 ceremony.

The Vatican has a long-standing practice of sending an envoy from a nearby country to attend Taiwan's presidential inaugurations, Kao said.

The MOFA official said Chennoth was a former Vatican top envoy to Taiwan from 1995 to 1999.

Of the 22 countries that the R.O.C. has official diplomatic relations with, the Vatican is the only one in Europe. …
