Judge orders scorching fines for illegal burning

MELFORT, Sask. - Two Saskatchewan logging contractors have been ordered to pay thousands of dollars in fines for illegally burning industrial waste.

Lutz Logging Inc., and WE Logging, both of the Hudson Bay area, pleaded guilty in Melfort provincial court to several charges from separate cases launched under the provincial Clean Air Act.

Lutz Logging pleaded to two charges and was assessed $14,000 in fines and surcharges, while the second business was given a $5,600 penalty after pleading guilty to one count of the same offence.

The Ministry of Environment says forestry staff identified environmental waste disposal issues for both companies during inspections in the fall of 2014.

After further investigation, conservation officers charged both companies in October 2015. …
