Wu Jianmin, Former Taiwan-Friendly Chinese Diplomat, Dies in Car Crash

By China Post news staff and Xinhua/China Daily--Wu Jianmin, former Chinese ambassador to France, died in a car accident early Saturday morning in Wuhan, capital of the central province of Hubei, according to China's Foreign Ministry.

Wu dedicated effort to promoting peaceful cross-strait reconciliation and visited Taiwan several times, Taiwan's Central News Agency (CNA) reported. His critique of populism and nationalism put him at the vanguard of Chinese scholars, CNA said. Deputy Director of East China Normal University's Institute for Cross-Strait Exchanges and Regional Development Bao Cheng-ke said Wu was a pacifist who emphasized "patience" and "tolerance" in cross-strait relations.
