Testimony of dead man heard at murder trial

WINNIPEG - The murder trial of Devin Hall has heard testimony from a dead man about the potential motive for the killing of Jeffrey Lau inside a popular Winnipeg restaurant.

Jurors were shown a videotaped statement to police made by Lau's friend, Justin Latinecz, who was one of five friends sitting with the victim when Lau was fatally shot at a Sailsbury House restaurant in 2012.

Court was told Latinecz was himself murdered in 2013; the case remains unsolved.

On the videotape, Latinecz told police Lau, who was 23, dealt cocaine in large quantities and didn't like sharing his profits with suppliers from Winnipeg or Vancouver.

He said he wasn't aware that his friend had any drug debt.

Latinecz described Lau as someone who kept to himself and trusted few people fully. …
