ALBERTA SAYS IT WILL WORK ON AUDITOR'S LABOUR RECOMMENDATIONS

Alberta's labour minister says the NDP government will work to meet recommendations in a newly released auditor general's report.

Christina Gray says that would include developing a new process to evaluate if the government is doing all it should to identify and prevent work-related injuries, illnesses and fatalities.

Auditor General Merwan Saher says the Labour Department has made some improvements since an audit six years ago identified problems with occupational health and safety orders.

But Saher's report says the province is still not doing enough to enforce workplace safety orders and is putting workers at risk.

AGENCY CLEARS EDMONTON POLICE OFFICER IN FATAL SHOOTING

Alberta's Serious Incident Response Team has cleared an Edmonton police officer in the fatal shooting of a suicidal man who had shot and wounded another officer.

The agency says the officer's use of lethal force was both reasonable and necessary during the May 2015 incident, which took place after officers pulled over a suspected drunk driver.

It says the 31-year-old man refused to get out of his vehicle, then tried to pull an officer through the window before grabbing a sawed-off shotgun and shooting the officer in the leg.

When the man again pointed his gun at police, a second officer fired multiple shots, striking the man once in the head.

RCMP SAY HOUSE EXPLOSION LIKELY DUE TO ILLEGAL DRUG PRODUCTION

Mounties say illegal drug production taking place in the bathroom of a Manitoba home is probably what caused the house to explode in flames.

RCMP say two men were severely burned in the incident Sunday in Selkirk, while four other adults and a six-month-old infant who were also in the home at the time were not injured.

Both of the injured men, who are 19 and 27, are in hospital in stable condition. …
