TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Applications for visiting Taiping Island are open to a select few only and not to the general public, the Ministry of National Defense (MND) said on Tuesday.

Speaking during a regular news briefing, Zhong Shu-ming ([...]), director of the MND's Joint Operation Division, said those who want to visit the Taiwan-controlled island in the South China Sea must apply to Air Force Command Headquarters for permission at least 45 days in advance.

The headquarters would then send in the applicants' information to National Police Agency and National Immigration Agency for review, he said.

The application is only open to select people including military personnel, Zhong said.

Nonmilitary personnel who visit the island for official business or for national defense related issues, as well as scholars and maintenance crews, can also file an application to the authorities. …
