Cancer Was Top Cause of Death in Taiwan Last Year: Health Ministry

The Ministry of Health and Welfare (MOHW) on Friday reported that cancer had once again topped the chart of 10 leading causes of death in the nation last year, and that Taiwanese were dying at a faster rate.

Cancer topped the list for the 34th consecutive year in 2015, and lung cancer and liver cancer were the two most commonly diagnosed types, according to the MOHW.

Officials said that obesity and an aging population were the major reasons that cancer continued to lead the chart.

Chronic diseases remained the primary reasons for death, accounting for nine of the top ten causes.

The only exception was mortality due to accidents, such as road accidents, which was ranked No. 6.

In terms of the total number of mortalities in 2015, the nation posted a 0.4-percent increase from the year before to 163,574, the report showed.
