Manila Bird Strike Causes Hole and CAL Flight Cancellation

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- A China Airlines (CAL) return flight to Taipei from Manila was canceled after a bird strike left a small hole in one of its wings Friday, according to media reports.

The CAL Flight 701 flying from Taipei hit a bird while landing at Manila's Ninoy Aquino International Airport in the morning, but the plane landed safely with no injuries reported, Taiwan's Central News Agency said.

Although the plane, a Boeing 747, had no problem landing, it would have been against regulations for the aircraft to take off again with a damaged wing and CAL canceled return Flight 702 to Taipei, a manager of the airline company was cited by CNA as saying.

The manager extended apologies to passengers on behalf of CAL, and said parts and components would arrive from Taipei today for repair of the plane. …
