Yonex Apologizes after Shoe Sponsorship Bust-Up with Tai

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The badminton association's official sponsor Yonex apologized Friday, after Tai Tzu-ying ([...]) allegedly faced pressure for failing to comply with sponsorship guidelines.

Tai claimed that the association had "threatened her" over her decision to wear a pair of custom-made shoes provided by rival sportswear firm Victor, though Yonex insisted that it had not pressured Tai.

It was revealed that Yonex had written to the association around three months ago, demanding it penalize athletes who fail to comply with sponsorship regulations "with the most serious disciplinary action." Yonex also threatened legal action should the association fail to heed its advice.

The association had signed a contract with Yonex, stipulating that players representing Taiwan at international events must wear the sportswear firm's clothing. …
