Manitoba Government Says Nearly 15,00 Kids on Wait List for Child Care

15,000 kids on wait list for child care in Manitoba

WINNIPEG - The Manitoba government says nearly 15,000 children are on a waiting list for child care.

Minister of Families Scott Fielding says the wait list as of July 31 is 14,872.

He says the province acknowledges that too many families in Manitoba are waiting for childcare spaces and that action is required.

Fielding says the new Tory government's mandate is to remove red tape, improve access to quality and affordable child care and create an environment where early childhood educators will thrive.

Pat Wege, executive director of the Manitoba Child Care Association, says licensing of new spaces has not caught up to demand.

She says there are about 34,000 childcare spaces in Manitoba and if parents want more, they will have to put pressure on their elected officials. …
