REGINA - The Regina Qu'Appelle Health Region will be handing out layoff notices after reviewing some units within the organization.

Executive director Keith Dewar says about 20 people will lose their jobs but provisions in their union contract mean they will be assisted in finding other positions within the health region.

In addition, three full-time and two part-time administrative jobs will not be filled, with Dewar saying those positions were mainly senior staff who decided to retire early.

CUPE Local 3967 president Scott McDonald says it was well known the health region was facing financial challenges, but he wasn't expecting to hear about layoffs.

He says the news is creating a tremendous amount of uncertainty as no one knows what areas will feel the crunch or who is on the chopping block. …
