WINNIPEG - The debate over development fees in Winnipeg isn't going to end anytime soon but for now a vote on the issue has been called off by Mayor Brian Bowman.

After hearing from dozens of heavy hitters from the city's development community Wednesday, Bowman put the matter over indefinitely.

Bowman would not give a timeline for when it might come back to council for a vote, saying he wants to allow for more discussion from both sides.

City administrators had suggested charging $10 per square foot on any new homes, $15 per square foot on retail and commercial builds, and $22 per square foot on office space.

Bowman had argued growth needs to pay for growth and the money would help pay for services in new developments so all taxpayers don't need to pay through higher property taxes. …
