Regina candidate dies but remains on ballot

REGINA - A Regina councillor who was seeking re-election this month has died but his name will remain on the ballot.

Terry Hincks, who represented Regina's Ward 9 since 2003, died Friday after a lengthy battle with cancer.

Mayor Michael Fougere says legally, Hincks' name stands on the ballot for the Oct. 26 municipal vote.

The city says if he wins, the runner-up will be elected councillor.

Fougere says Hincks fought cancer with dignity and strength, and hoped to survive for the opening of the city's new Mosaic stadium.

The stadium's official opening isn't until summer 2017, but a test event with university football was held with over 16,000 fans earlier this month.

"It's up to the voters -- they can choose. They now know that he passed away," said Fougere about the upcoming election. …
