NAT017 - (AS-New-Zealand-Earthquake) WELLINGTON, New Zealand. x-14s. New Zealand has begun a rescue operation involving hundreds of tourists and residents who remain stranded in the coastal town of Kaikoura (ky-KOOR'-ah) after Monday's powerful earthquake cut off train and vehicle access. The country's defence force says it has started ferrying people out by military helicopter. New Zealand Transport Minister Gerry Brownlee says the government is prepared to step in and help Kaikoura as it recovers from the quake. ("..a difficult time.") (SOURCE:The Associated Press)
