Angler dies after falling in Bow River

CALGARY - Despite the heroic efforts of another person, a middle-aged man who was taken to hospital by emergency crews after he fell into the Bow River while fishing has died from his injuries.

Fire officials say the man was fishing Monday afternoon when he fell into the water and was swept downstream.

Randy McRae, South District fire chief, says another angler saw it happened and jumped in to try and save the man.

McRae says the fellow fisher swam across the river, grabbed the man, pulled him out and started CPR.

McRae says the man who was swept away was unresponsive when firefighters got to him and he was taken to hospital with undetermined injuries.

The rescuer was treated at the scene for mild hypothermia.

"It was an incredibly heroic act although I would recommend to anybody not to jump into the river under these circumstances," says McRae. …
