CALGARY. x-21s. Defence lawyers in Alberta say the Alberta government intends to close down a highly successful treatment program for sex offenders. Ian Savage, the president of the Criminal Defence Lawyers Association in Calgary, says they've been tipped off that the Phoenix program, operated out of Alberta Hospital Edmonton, will shut down by next March. Savage says the program has a remarkably low recidivism risk and without it many offenders could reoffend.

TAG: Savage says the current system involved 35 hours of therapy a week and a possible replacement in Calgary would provide only six hours.
