Saskatoon warns patients of infection risk

SASKATOON - The Saskatoon Health Region has joined others across the country in warning patients who have had open-heart surgery that they are at potential risk for infection.

The warning is aimed at patients who had the surgery between 2011 and 2016.

Alberta Health Services and the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority have issued similar warnings.

It's all related to a device used to heat and cool blood during surgery, which has been linked to mycobacteria by Health Canada.

While the risk is low, the Saskatoon Health Region says it is issuing the warning as a precautionary measure.

More than 2,173 patients have undergone open-heart surgery over the last five years in Saskatoon and, to date, none have been diagnosed with the infection. …
