Realtors Hit by Sluggish Demand

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Sluggish demand has seen 13,000 real estate agents leave the profession, bringing those who have left the sector over the past two years to 110,000, according to the Ubee Trends Research Center.

The center cited statistics compiled by the Ministry of the Interior as indicating that as of the end of October, the number of certified realtors had declined to 152,974.

The research center said that many realtors had let their brokerage certificates expire after failing to find new employment.

In addition, another 110,000 still-certified realtors were currently unemployed.

Hard to Find Home Buyers

A top Ubee official said many local real estate businesses have been forced to merge or scale down operations to cut operating costs.

But the sustained difficulty in finding home buyers has driven a large number of firms to exit the market. …
