BC05 - (Whale-Death)

SEATTLE. X-23s. A wildlife biologist says the apparent death of a matriarch among a group of southern killer whales on the West Coast may particularly affect one of the 24 remaining animals. Brad Hanson of the Northwest Fisheries Science Center says J-2, or Granny, hasn't been seen since mid-October and may have been the latest adopted mother of L-87. The male whale from the L-pod joined the J-pod about two years ago, and Hanson says that group of whales wasn't the only ones he turned to after his mother died.
