NAT113 - (US-SCI-Sex-Crazed Birds) WASHINGTON. x-09s. A new study published in the journal Nature takes a look at the quest for love made by the male pectoral sandpiper. The birds migrate from South America to breeding grounds in the Arctic tundra in the summer, where the females are only fertile for a few weeks. Correspondent Seth Borenstein (BOR'-ehn-styn) says German researchers tracked one desperate small shorebird that logged more than 13-thousand kilometres in two dozen different hook-up attempts over a frenetic four weeks. TAG: The average bird flies about 178 kilometres between mating attempts. In a breeding season, the males log on average about three-thousand kilometres.
