NEW Year's Eve celebrations WILL take place in Manchester's Albert Square as revellers try to end the year by breaking a Guinness World Record.

Organisers hope to arrange the biggest ever mannequin challenge outside the town hall.

The challenge - the latest craze to take social media by storm - where a group of people are videoed appearing to be frozen in time like mannequins.

City centre chief Coun Pat Karney said it will be a lot of fun to go with the fireworks to celebrate the start of a new year.

He said: "It's early days but we will be having celebrations in Albert Square for the New Year. There will be fireworks and a lot of homemade entertainment.

"As part of that we are going to attempt to break a Guinness World Record by being the largest group to do the mannequin challenge.

"There were 10,000 at the celebrations last year so if everyone takes part, I am sure we will do it. …
