MANCHESTER United legend Gary Neville claims he was only doing what Jamie Carragher would have done when he tried to get Javier Mascherano sent off in 2010.

With Liverpool 1-0 up at Old Trafford, referee Howard Webb awarded United a penalty after Antonio Valencia was fouled by the Argentine.

Neville, sensing a red card could be in the offing, immediately went over to the referee in a bid to try to influence his decision.

Carragher, infamously, took exception and the pair squared off - much to Neville's amusement after Mascherano avoided a red card.

"I went straight to the referee because one of the big things in these games is if you can get someone sent off, you do it straight away," he told Sky Sports.

"He [Carragher] knew what I was doing and he would've done the same by the way. …
