JOSE Mourinho switched Henrikh Mkhitaryan to left-back against Liverpool because Matteo Darmian was instructed not to attack as frequently as Antonio Valencia.

Darmian was withdrawn for Marouane Fellaini in the 76th minute and Mkhitaryan - who started the match on the right flank - moved to left-back to accommodate United's more direct style. United's Plan B paid off when Wayne Rooney, their first substitute, saw his cross nodded onto the woodwork by Fellaini, only for Valencia to tee-up Zlatan Ibrahimovic for United's equaliser on the rebound.

Darmian has started nine of United's 16-game winning run at leftback and Mourinho had the option of bringing Daley Blind on in the second-half but opted for a riskier strategy. "Do you want to buy him? Are you an agent?" Mourinho replied to an Italian journalist who asked about Darmian's role. …
