UNITED have triggered the one-year option clause in Antonio Valencia's contract.

The 31-year-old right-back last signed an Old Trafford deal in 2014 ahead of Louis van Gaal's stint at the Reds.

The three-year agreement expires this summer, but written into the contract was the 12-month option to extend either by the club or the player.

United have now decided early to keep the Ecuadorian on board for another year and have activated the clause.

Last week the club also triggered Marouane Fellaini's one-year option.

It is another vote of confidence from Reds boss Jose Mourinho for Valencia.

He has been Mourinho's go-to right-back all season, forcing Italian Matteo Darmian to look for matches as a left-back.
