A longtime Toronto bouncer described as a "gentle giant" has been identified as one of the five people who died when a gunman opened fire in a crowded beachfront nightclub in Mexico early yesterday.

Mexican authorities initially said two Canadians were among the dead, but Global Affairs Canada has since confirmed 49-year-old Kirk Wilson as the lone Canadian fatality at the Playa del Carmen resort.

Global Affairs also confirms at least two other Canadians were wounded at the crowded beachfront Blue Parrot nightclub.

Authorities say at least one person died in the crush to escape and some of the 15 people wounded or injured were hurt in the stampede.

Mexican officials say Wilson was working as a B-P-M security supervisor for an international music festival being held at the resort and longtime friend Neil Forester says Wilson was one of several people from the Toronto area lending a hand to the festival's Canadian organizers. …
