(Ont-Health-Care)

Ontario Health Minister Eric Hoskins says he joins those who are concerned about the sustainability of the province's health-care system.

The province is drawing up its 2017-18 budget -- which it has promised to balance, while still increasing spending in the more than 50-billion-dollar health file.

The Ontario Nurses' Association is calling for more health-care funding, saying more than 16-hundred registered nurse positions have been cut in a two-year period.

But Hoskins responds that more than two-thousand nurses have been hired in hospitals in the past three or four years. (The Canadian Press)

(Forcillo-Appeal)

The appeal of a Toronto police officer convicted of attempted murder in the fatal shooting of a teen on a streetcar is expected to be heard in October.

Constable James Forcillo is out on bail while appealing his case, after being sentenced to six years in prison last July.

His lawyers say his bail has been extended until October 1st, and his case is scheduled to be heard the following day at the Ontario Court of Appeal.

He was acquitted last year of second-degree murder in the 2013 death of Sammy Yatim, but was found guilty of attempted murder for continuing to fire after the dying teen had fallen down. (The Canadian Press)

(Worker-Fatal-Injury)

A Burlington-based company has been fined 125-thousand dollars after a worker was fatally injured by an electrical shock.

Konecranes Canada, which services industrial cranes and lifting devices, has pleaded guilty to a charge under the Occupational Health and Safety Act in connection with the July 2015 incident.

Court heard a Konecranes worker was repairing a 20-ton overhead crane at an auto parts manufacturer in Richmond Hill, and was later joined by a manager who wanted to see the repairs.

The worker and manager used a scissor lift to reach the crane, but while in the scissor lift, the manager got an electrical shock and died in hospital. …
