(60s-Scoop)

The federal government has backed off on its plan to force a judge to delay his decision on the '60s Scoop class-action lawsuit.

That means Ontario Superior Court Justice Edward Belobaba will now rule on the long-running lawsuit as early as Tuesday.

In an email Friday to the judge, a senior Justice Department lawyer said it would not proceed with a formal motion to have him delay the decision.

The Ontario action, launched in 2009, seeks 1.3 billion dollars for '60s Scoop survivors.

It claims thousands of aboriginal children who were placed in non-aboriginal homes suffered harm when the government failed to ensure they retained their cultural identity. (The Canadian Press)

(Softwood-Dispute)

Ontario has joined Quebec in urging the federal government to set up a loan guarantee program for softwood lumber producers who face the threat of tariffs and restrictions on exports to the U-S.

The U-S government is investigating whether Canadian softwood lumber imports are harming the American forestry sector, and there are fears it could levy new duties this spring.

Concerns about layoffs in the forestry sector prompted Quebec Premier Philippe Couillard to commit to providing loan guarantees to help producers pay duties if Ottawa doesn't.

Ottawa, meantime, is promising to defend the interests of Canada's softwood industry, including through litigation, if needed. (The Canadian Press)

Ontario cabinet ministers have been armed with talking points to promote Ontario trade with the U-S in President Donald Trump's protectionist era.

The sheet of Ontario-U-S economic tidbits was done up by the Ministry of Intergovernmental Affairs and given to cabinet the day before Trump's inauguration.
