Ontario's high school teachers' union says informal talks with the province are planned for next week to discuss a return to contract extension negotiations.

The Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation is the only teachers' union in the province that has not yet extended its current deal to 2019.

The last round of negotiations with education unions was contentious, as support staff and elementary teachers staged work-to-rule campaigns and the government threatened to dock their pay.

Securing contract extensions past the date of next year's June election ensures the province won't have to contend with any such job action in the lead-up to next year's vote. (The Canadian Press)



Coroners officials say an inquest will be held into the death of aboriginal artist Moses Beaver.

The 56-year-old artist was pronounced dead in a hospital on Monday after being found unresponsive in a Thunder Bay jail cell.

Aboriginal leaders have called for an investigation, saying Beaver died under what they termed unexplained circumstances.

They say the loss has been compounded by the fact that Beaver's sister died Wednesday in a collision in Thunder Bay as she was travelling to comfort family and make funeral arrangements for her brother. (The Canadian Press)



A man has been found guilty of second-degree murder in the prom-night killing of an 18-year-old student in downtown Ottawa.

Brandon Volpi was stabbed in the neck and chest during an altercation outside Les Suites Hotel during an after-prom party in June of 2014.

Witnesses said Devontay Hackett, who was also 18 at the time, was fighting with another student over a missing cellphone when Volpi was asked to intervene.

The jury took two days to reach its verdict.

The mandatory minimum sentence for second-degree murder is life without parole for at least ten years. …
