(Ont-Winter-Disconnections)

Legislation was quickly passed this morning that prevents local electricity distribution companies from disconnecting customers in the winter.

The Liberal government said yesterday that it would introduce the legislation if distribution companies had not voluntarily agreed by last night to stop the practice of cutting off customers in winter.

A spokesman for Energy Minister Glenn Thibeault says it wasn't that any companies refused to comply but some "just wouldn't be able to do it in a timely manner."

The province had previously refused to act on requests by opposition parties to break out the ban from the omnibus Burden Reduction Act so it could pass more quickly. (The Canadian Press)

(Ont-Energy-Waste)

The Canadian Taxpayers Federation has given the Ontario Liberals a Lifetime Achievement award for government waste for mishandling energy policy.

The dubious distinction was handed out as part of the group's annual Teddy awards for the worst government waste from the past year.

The federation says the Liberal government has a long track record of mismanaging the province's energy policy, resulting in what it describes as "an expensive disaster for Ontario consumers."

It cites a series of "ill-advised policy decisions" -- ranging from the costly cancellation of planned gas plants in the middle of an election to the decision to impose a new cap-and-trade system for carbon emissions, which the Auditor General says will increase electricity prices by around 25 per cent. (Brampton-Fatal-Fire)

The fire marshal's office says that despite being required by law, there were no working smoke detectors in a Brampton rental home that caught fire last week -- killing a couple and their daughter.

Spokeswoman Carol Gravelle says the Ontario Fire Code requires smoke alarms to be installed on every floor and outside all sleeping areas of homes. …
