Neglected dog's owners banned for life from owning pets

CALGARY - The owners of a bulldog that was neglected so badly it was starving and had open wounds on its body have been banned for life from having pets.

Jamie O'Leary, who is 34, and 24-year-old Janice Piper pleaded guilty in Calgary court to causing distress to the dog, who was found by a passerby at a strip mall in September 2014.

The Calgary Humane Society said at the time it was one of the worst cases of animal neglect it had ever seen.

Court heard the dog named Bamboo also had blood in her urine and would have been in distress for weeks leading up to her death.

The dog died in surgery.

O'Leary had previous convictions for animal cruelty and was breeding bulldogs at the time. …
