Having spent eight years on the St. Petersburg City Council, freshman state Rep. Wengay Newton already is familiar with many of the issues that lawmakers deal with in Tallahassee.

Take red-light cameras.

Newton, a St. Petersburg Democrat whose district includes part of Sarasota and Manatee counties, was the only council member to vote against installing red-light cameras at St. Petersburg intersections in 2010. He thought they were simply a way for the city to make money. His view hasn't changed.

So when a bill came before him this year that would abolish red-light cameras statewide, Newton was happy to support it.

Newton's local government service also is evident in the bills he is sponsoring, which touch on issues that many municipalities are grappling with, such as police body cameras and affordable housing. …
