Panthers Stun Wpial Kings in a Thriller

Article excerpt

The ending wasn't exactly as Franklin Regional drew it up, but the result was exactly what the Panthers were looking for.

Down by a point against WPIAL champion Moon with seconds remaining, the Panthers wanted to get the ball into the post.

That, however, is the domain of Moon standout and 6-foot-7 Penn recruit Jarrod Simmons.

The ball eventually ended up in the hands of Simon Behr, who drove inside, spun around and threw up a baby hook that fell through the net with 3.5 seconds remaining to give Franklin Regional (14-11) a thrilling, 52-51 upset victory.

"We were trying to get the ball into the post, but we kicked it back to [Behr])," said Franklin Regional coach Brad Midgley.

"He played well, so it was a nice second option."

The game-winner gave Behr a game-high 18 points, one more point than Simmons.

Hunter Stewart added 14 points for Franklin Regional, while Moon's second-leading scorer was Nick Castelveter, who connected on three 3-pointers and had 13 points.

The Tigers (20-6) downed the Panthers twice this season, including a 76-37 drubbing at Moon Jan. 20 when Franklin Regional had a few injured players.

The Panthers also learned from those losses and came up with a game plan that limited the effectiveness of Simmons, who had a monster WPIAL championship game against Hampton during which he recorded 22 points and 21 rebounds and also collected eight blocked shots.

"We wanted to pull Simmons out," said Midgley.

"We spent the majority of our offense pulling him away from the hoop and opening up driving lanes."

The plan worked to perfection and the Panthers advanced to play Meadville Tuesday.

* Meadville 55, Chartiers Valley 45: In a game played at Edinboro University, Meadville (22-1) defeated the Colts (17-8).

Chartiers Valley played without leading scorer Ross Wilkerson, who was arrested earlier this week on sexual assault charges.

* Riverside 50, Westinghouse 39: Justin Baust scored nine of his game-high 15 points in the fourth quarter to help Riverside (17-8) pull away at Allderdice.

Baust knocked down 7 of 9 free-throw attempts in the final quarter.

Dylan Speicher chipped in 13 points and seven rebounds. …
