Bradenton Democrat Randy Cooper has filed to run for the District 71 state House seat in 2018, joining a race that already includes two Republicans.

Cooper, 60, is a civil engineer with a degree from the University of South Florida. He recently won his third term as a commissioner with the West Manatee Fire Rescue District.

"I believe I have a strong history in the community with many positive results," Cooper said. "I want to put the community's interests above politics."

Cooper has lived in Bradenton since 2003. Before that he lived in Tampa, where his family settled after moving around frequently because of his father's military career. Cooper's own military service includes an 11-year stint with the Florida National Guard. He also was a volunteer firefighter in Hillsborough County. …
