Drain the swamp. That's what Trump supporters chanted during the campaign. Who knew that his (their?) vision was that the swamp would be replaced by toxic waste dumps?

As a longtime Pittsburgher and scientist at the University of Pittsburgh, I have seen the smoky, dirty, polluted city of my South Side youth transformed into a wonderful, clean and healthy place. A most livable city!

Gone are the rotten egg smells on the parkway near Oakland and Hazelwood, replaced by Uber, biotech centers and clean technology. Gone are the "silent springs" our Rachel Carson wrote about to be replaced by eagles nesting in Hays.

Do we really think that the old Pittsburgh was the "America the great" Pittsburgh? Some people lost jobs, but we replaced those with high-tech ones. …
