Englewood Cliffs Set to Introduce Budget Tuesday

ENGLEWOOD CLIFFS -- The Borough Council plans to introduce its 2017 budget on Tuesday in a special meeting.

Although final numbers are still part of the draft document and have not been released, Council President Carrol McMorrow said, residents can expect at least a $58 tax increase per household as a result of the borough's total assessed value dropping by $5.58 million, she said at the March 8 meeting.

This is an "uncontrollable" increase, Borough Administrator Catherine Steinel said, and is separate from any tax increase the budget may already have.

"Even if you came in at zero, you would have still had to make up -- for it to be zero to your taxpayers -- some form of $58 cut," she said.

The commercial value, which has been decreasing for the last several years, dropped by more than $32 million from 2016 to 2017, McMorrow said. …
