Lugo Throws Well in First WBC Start

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - Seth Lugo doesn't need to be in camp to make a statement.

The starter shined in his first start in the World Baseball Classic on Friday night, throwing 51/3 scoreless innings for Team Puerto Rico against Team Venezuela. He allowed just one hit and struck out three in an 11-0 win against a favored opponent.

Mets manager Terry Collins said Lugo's performance caught his eye, with Lugo dominating a lineup that featured Jose Altuve, Miguel Cabrera and Victor Martinez, among others.

"Against that lineup? You better believe it does," Collins said. "Those national teams are playing for a little integrity and to shut down that lineup is pretty impressive."

Lugo is in a competition with Zack Wheeler and Robert Gsellman for the fifth starter spot, and it will come down to Gsellman and Lugo since Wheeler is slated to begin the year in extended spring training. Lugo has allowed three earned runs in seven innings in camp.

Collins said it's possible the team could use the runner-up in a relief role, but also said the team would like to have starters stretched out with Class AAA Las Vegas in case of an injury. …
