State Adds 36,400 Jobs in Construction in Year

Florida added 36,400 construction jobs during the past year, more than any other state.

It was among 39 states that saw their construction workforces grow from January 2016 to January 2017, according to an analysis of federal data by the trade group Associated General Contractors of America.

Other states adding a large number of new of jobs: California (15,500, 2 percent); Texas (13,700, 2 percent); Washington (12,300, 6.9 percent) and Oregon (10,000 jobs, 11.5 percent). Oregon also added the highest percentage of new jobs during the past year, followed by Idaho (11.3 percent, 4,500 jobs); Nevada (10.2 percent, 7,600 jobs) and Rhode Island (8.9 percent, 1,600 jobs), the trade group reported.

From December to January, Florida added 10,700 jobs, for growth of about 2.2 percent.

Contractors continued to complain about a dearth of workers, particularly in the skilled trades. …
