Seven Lions Advance to Quarterfinals

Penn State began the first day of competition at the NCAA Division I wrestling championships, which began Thursday at Scottrade Center in St. Louis, with one fewer entry than expected, but still turned in an impressive performance.

Nick Suriano was seeded No. 3 in the 125-pound weight class for the Nittany Lions, but the freshman was scratched Wednesday after failing to recover sufficiently from an ankle injury.

Despite the loss of Suriano, Penn State had its remaining eight entries post victories in the first round. Seven of the eight posted wins in the second round to advance to Friday's quarterfinals. And the Nittany Lions picked up bonus points in 11 of those bouts, as seven came by technical fall, two via pins, and one by major decision. …
