City Continues to Pay Chapman's Fees

OPEN GOVERNMENT LAWSUIT

Will Susan Chapman's legal fees in the on-going open-government lawsuit against her continue to be paid by the city, even if the lawsuit isn't resolved when she leaves the City Commission this spring? In short, yes, said City Attorney Robert Fournier on Wednesday.

Chapman narrowly lost her bid for re-election on Tuesday night, falling 52 votes behind Martin Hyde for the third-place spot in a runoff May 9. She and outgoing commissioner Suzanne Atwell, who did not seek another term, will be replaced by two new commissioners in May.

But the Citizens for Sunshine lawsuit against Chapman could continue past her tenure on the commission.

Although a local circuit judge ruled in her favor last summer, the case is under appeal and oral arguments are scheduled before a Florida 2nd District Court of Appeal judge in Tampa next week. …
