Sheriff's Officer Charged with Providing Phone to an Inmate

A 21-year veteran of the Passaic County Sheriff's Department was charged on Friday with supplying a cellphone to an inmate in the county jail, authorities said.

Wade Hyman, 49, was arrested in the morning in Totowa by members of the Passaic County Prosecutor's Office. He was charged with one count of use of certain electronic devices in a correctional facility, a second-degree crime that is punishable by five to 10 years in prison and a fine.

Hyman, who worked as a corrections officer in the Passaic County Jail, is accused of providing his personal cellphone to an inmate on Jan. 20. The inmate then used the phone to contact an individual outside the jail, authorities said.

Six days later, when Sheriff Richard H. Berdnik received information about the call, Hyman was suspended without pay. …
