Hribal's trial in stabbings at school set for August

Trial for Alex Hribal, the former Franklin Regional High School student accused of stabbing 20 students and a security guard there in 2014, has been set for Aug. 7.

The date was assigned at a pretrial conference Tuesday before Westmoreland County Common Pleas Judge Christopher A. Feliciani.

It followed a court order Feb. 3 in which Judge Feliciani said he wouldn't allow the 19-year-old to plead guilty but mentally ill to dozens of charges in connection with the April 9, 2014, incident at the Murrysville school.

Although Mr. Hribal "may have suffered from a psychotic illness," the judge concluded, it "did not cause him to substantially lack the capacity to appreciate the wrongfulness of his conduct or conform his behavior to the requirements of the law" that day. …
