TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The Defense Ministry on Wednesday issued a rare threat to sue a journalist over a report it says could hurt the unity of the armed forces, triggering outrage and fears that the move could harm press freedom.

The story, published Tuesday by online Chinese-language outlet Up Media, centers on alleged infighting between two senior military personnel, claiming that Deputy Chief of General Staff Vice Admiral Pu Tse-chun ([...]) demoted a naval official over a personal grudge.

The story included quotes from Pu rejecting the accusation.
