County Revokes Liquor License at Athletic Association

The Allegheny County sheriff ordered the Pittsburgh Athletic Association in Oakland to stop selling alcoholic beverages Friday for failure to pay the county's 7 percent tax on drinks.

County Treasurer John Weinstein initiated the action, saying the club owes the county $48,610 in delinquent drink taxes and $7,838 in unpaid hotel occupancy taxes.

Sheriff's deputies "confiscated the liquor license [and] took all the liquor and placed it in a room in the basement and padlocked it so they couldn't sell the alcohol," said Mike McCabe, solicitor with the treasurer's office. "They can still serve food."

The rest of the facility remains open.

Mr. McCabe said the club hasn't paid the drink tax since August.

The president of the club, Tom Trimbur, said he was blindsided by the action. …
